Community Programs Coordinator

Description

The Community Programs Coordinator oversees the development, implementation, evaluation, and ongoing operations of educational community partnership and outreach programs based at the main Mote Marine Laboratory campus in Sarasota and at Mote satellite campuses from Sarasota to the Florida Keys.

General Duties

The Community Programs Coordinator is responsible for the development of successful collaborations; program development; implementation; and evaluation of community-focused educational programs. Duties include the development and implementation of programs aimed at increasing the involvement and engagement of underserved and underrepresented community members with STEM education programs across Mote campuses. Responsibilities include: teaching and program implementation, program and curriculum content development, and relationship development with internal and external partners. The Community Programs Coordinator works closely with all staff within the Education, Aquarium and Outreach Division and colleagues in the Research and Support Divisions. The Community Programs Coordinator actively communicates with senior staff within the organization to plan for the future and to create mission-based programs that are aligned with Mote Marine Laboratory’s 2020 Vision and Strategic Plan.

Knowledge, Skills, and other Characteristics

The Community Programs Coordinator requires strong science content knowledge, particularly marine science; a strong interest in promoting educational equity; and experience in enhancing engagement for historically underrepresented groups in STEM fields. Our ideal candidate is honest, caring, and professional with a tireless work ethic and a contagious, positive energy. S/he is a giving team member, a creative problem solver, and an enthusiastic collaborator and networker who believes deeply in Mote and its mission. This candidate will possess outstanding communication skills, poise, and confidence, skilled in written and oral communication with the ability to represent Mote Marine Laboratory to a variety of audiences. This candidate should have proven ability to develop and implement objectives, strategies, and tactics with skill in effective collaboration, curriculum development and implementing educational projects and programs. They should have a strong commitment to creating exceptional and impactful experiences for participants, sound judgment, an understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the local community, and the determination to work towards the program and Lab goals. We expect the highest ethical standards, personal integrity, intelligence, good humor, resilience, energy, and spirit.


Minimum Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree
  • Master's degree or additional graduate coursework preferred
  • A minimum of four years experience in direct educational program delivery and program coordination
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and as part of a team in an informal educational setting
  • Demonstrated excellence in developing educational activities for diverse audiences and settings
  • Demonstrated passion for teaching or facilitating learning for youth
  • Science content expertise preferred
  • Ability to communicate successfully across a wide range of audiences, including internal and external program stakeholders, participants and their guardians and other outside organizations
  • Ability to translate and transfer Mote Marine Laboratory research through educational programs
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently
  • Flexibility to travel locally and work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Highly developed computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Google)
  • Ability to move from place to place; utilize a computer terminal and general office equipment; lift and carry up to 25 pounds short distances
  • Valid Florida driver's license or willing to obtain within one month of hiring
  • U.S. citizenship or foreign citizen's U.S. work permit appropriate for the work
  • CPR/First aid certified or ability to obtain prior to employment
  • Lifeguard certified or ability to obtain prior to employment
Laboratory Category: Exempt

Working Hours

Normal hours 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday – Friday; with a one-hour lunch break.

Some evening and weekend work will be required.

Supervision

The Community Programs Coordinator is supervised by the Assistant Vice President for Education, within the Education, Aquarium and Outreach Division.
