Job Summary
This is a full-time position as the Marine Science Station Teacher at the Citrus County School District’s Marine Science Station in Crystal River, Florida.  The Marine Science Station Teacher’s primary job goal is to implement experiential student learning activities in a classroom/lab setting, aboard the Marine Science Station vessels, and within the coastal waters of Citrus County and the Gulf of Mexico.  The Marine Science Station Teacher provides hands-on content in marine biology, oceanography, coastal ecology, and environmental science.  Other responsibilities include aquatic animal care, aquarium life support maintenance, maintenance of teaching resources, grant writing, basic vessel and field equipment maintenance, and other incidental tasks consistent with the objectives of the position. 
 
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with State of Florida educational certification/eligibility in Biology (Marine Biology emphasis) or related science field.
  • Competence in subject matter assigned to teach, including Marine Biology, Physical Oceanography, Ecology, and Environmental Science.
  • Working knowledge of computer applications and educational technology.
  • A valid USCG Master Captain License (or willingness to obtain) and First Aid/CPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain).
 
To successfully perform within this position, applicants should have the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and/or competencies:
  • Professionally committed; genuinely interested in child development; dynamic and engaging personality; highly developed interpersonal skills; highly developed oral and written communication skills; educational creativity; and leadership ability.
  • Skilled in teaching aquatic and marine science to elementary and secondary students who possess a diverse array of learning modalities.
  • Skilled in water-based, outdoor education and able to work in physically demanding environments.
  • Skilled in the proper and safe operation of vessels (i.e., power boats, canoes, kayaks) and knowledgeable of their basic maintenance.
  • Ability to effectively and appropriately communicate with youth and adults.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in professional collaborative groups.
 
Physical Requirements
Heavy work.  Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently as needed to move objects.  Must be able to swim well and use snorkeling equipment.  Must be able to work in adverse physical and weather conditions found in Florida throughout the year.  Consistently exposed to outdoor biological and physical elements present on the Marine Science Station campus, aboard vessels, and in the water.
 
Terms of Employment
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Base starting salary is $35,000. The length of the work year is 10 months, 196 days with the option of extra duty camp days during the summer and possibly weekends.

The Naturalist – Nature Center assists with the daily husbandry and care of the Conservancy’s wildlife ambassadors and educates visitors at the Conservancy Nature Center. This position reports to the Animal Care Coordinator and supports the daily care of the Conservancy’s wildlife ambassador collection including animal husbandry; maintenance of LSS (life support systems), aquaria, and vivaria; and medical care in partnership with the staff veterinarian. The Naturalist – Nature Center also plans and delivers visitor education programs and special education events at the Nature Center to educate audiences of all ages about Southwest Florida’s environment, conservation, and the mission of the Conservancy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides care and maintenance under the Animal Care Coordinator of live animal exhibits and enclosures including marine aquaria, reptile and amphibian vivaria, and avian enclosures.
  • Interprets Southwest Florida’s natural environment and the Conservancy Nature Center to visitors of diverse ages and backgrounds.
  • Develops, enhances, and delivers Nature Center visitor programs to educate the public on the environment of Southwest Florida and build environmental literacy – encouraging visitors to take action to protect the environment.
  • Supports the design, construction, and maintenance of LSS / aquaria and exhibits.
  • Supports with coordinating education special events (Earth Day, Endangered Species Day, Kids Free Saturday, etc.).
  • Develops and delivers special projects and new programs, as directed by manager or supervisor.
  • Delivers excellent customer service, internally and externally.
  • Assists with the supervision and training of Conservancy Nature Center volunteers and interns.
  • Maintains detailed records of living collections.
  • Oversees successful enrichment program for the Wildlife Ambassador Collection.
  • Assists with the collection of education and exhibit animals - e.g. marine organisms for education/aquaria and their daily care.
  • Understands emergency protocols for live animals and animal exhibits/ helps execute these procedures when necessary.
  • Assists with related daily administrative duties.
 
Experience Required:
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelors’ degree in ecology, science, education, or related field.
  • Minimum two years of related science/ecology, education, or animal husbandry background and experience.
  • Friendly, energetic, and outgoing personality, with the proven ability to provide exceptional customer service.
  • Knowledge and experience in the care and husbandry of aquaria and vivaria; aquatic, marine and terrestrial life; fish, invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, birds, etc.
  • Experience with the husbandry and handling of sea turtles, conditional reptiles, Class II, and Class III wildlife including alligators, indigo snakes, and Burmese pythons preferred.
  • Science/ecology background and experience, with teaching experience preferred.
  • Excellent public speaking skills.
  • Ability to maintain and troubleshoot LSS and aquarium systems.
  • Experience working with and supervising volunteers and interns highly desirable.
  • Strong organization, communication, time management, and leadership skills.
  • Enthusiastic desire to work with children and adults.
  • Strong commitment to the conservation of Florida’s natural environment.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member.
  • Ability to conceptualize, design, and implement programs, projects, and activities related to the mission of the organization.

This is a part time position (20 hours/week) at the Charlotte Harbor Aquatic Preserves office. The position will focus on the CHAP Snorkeling and Aquatic Preserve Boat Tours (Ecotour program) which includes; organizing, scheduling, advertising, maintaining Eventbrite website, and conducting the tours. The candidate must be comfortable with swimming and snorkeling, boating, leading groups in the water, and public speaking. Must have knowledge of the local estuarine/marine environment and ability to identify flora and fauna. CPR/First Aid and lifeguarding certification or experience is preferred. Other duties include carrying out the objectives in the management plan, and conducting other education/outreach efforts.

Description: Staff lead interpretive programs in tropical marine science for campers/visiting schools and participate in hospitality services required to run a residential facility. Extensive training: science seminars; American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding, Oxygen Administration, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer; skin diving leadership; seamanship and boat handling; camp life; and teaching techniques.

Qualifications: 
Marine Science Instructor: Recent college graduate in marine science, the biological sciences, or a related field.  All applicants must be strong swimmers. Teaching experience preferred; SCUBA certification required.

Non-science, summer camp positions are also currently available.

Dolphins Plus is now accepting applications for the position of " Education Associate".  This 3-month, paid, seasonal position will run mid May 2016 - mid August 2016.  Pay will be $1500/month (no benefits).
 
Dolphins Plus, located in Key Largo, is a pair of marine mammal zoological facilities committed to the conservation and protection of marine mammals worldwide through our active involvement in research, extensive education and outreach programs, involvement with and support of local marine mammal stranding organizations, and powerful, daily interactions with the general public. We are an active member of the research community through the submission of peer-reviewed publications, participation at national and international scientific conferences, and the support of undergraduate and graduate research projects and applied scientific training. Dolphins Plus also has an extensive education program designed to promote a greater understanding of marine science, marine mammal and ecosystem conservation, and environmental stewardship.  These programs include a broad range of classes, including activities and lesson plans designed for children, continuing education programs for Florida teachers, career guidance workshops, and university level (undergraduate and graduate) coursework and instruction.  
 
The primary responsibility of the Education Associate is to assist the Assistant Director and Director of Education with the education programs at Dolphins Plus, including but not limited to:  curriculum/program development, all summer camp programs, and visiting school groups.  The Education Associate should have a strong passion for education and working with children of all ages, as well as adults and teachers.  The Education Associate should also have some experience with teaching, including practical training, excellent communication and time management skills, some familiarity with the Sunshine State Standards, a strong proficiency in the use of educational tools and software (e.g. PowerPoint and Microsoft Word), and a sense of creativity.  Preference will be given to candidates who possess current first aid and CPR certifications. 
 
Basic Requirements/Qualifications:
  • Candidates must –
    • 1) Be at least 21 years of age.
    • 2) Have completed at least 1 semester of graduate level coursework.
    • 3) Be available for a minimum of 3 months (40-hour/week) (+/- weekends, emergencies).
    • 4) Pass a Level 2 background check.
  • The Education Associate must be capable of maintaining financial stability throughout the duration of the position, including the cost of housing (including utilities), transportation, meals, travel, and personal expenses. Dolphins Plus does not provide housing. However, our staff is available to assist in identifying affordable housing in close proximity to Dolphins Plus.
  • Candidates must have strong swimming skills, must be able to withstand long periods of time outdoors in warm conditions (~ 85°-95°F), and should be physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs.
